6e classe

Because it's winter in Vermont, we had a very timely focus in our class discussions in the past several months: snowmen!! You can read about our activities in class in a post Madame Litten's wrote for her blog, cicanteach.com . We recited poems, sang songs, watched short video clips, did readings, and wrote stories all based around these amazing "creatures." Students performed a rap version of the poem Chanson pour les enfants l'hiver at our French rep today! You can hear a recording of that here.
Students are now reading a novel: Les Pirates français des Caraïbes, that will take us through the adventures of François de Granmont, Antoine Médina, and Antoine's fiancée, Rachelle.

In sixth grade recently we have been working on multiple skills. Our Noël Madness activities allowed us to practice our speaking and reading. A short video about a young boy and a puppy that share more in common than meets the eye gave us opportunities to work on listening and writing as well as reading and speaking. A map activity set the scene and geography for the book we will  be reading in the new year. We continue to have organic conversations on whatever topics may arise. (This allowed Madame to introduce one of her favorite French phrases-revenons à nos moutons!)

Our activities in sixth grade recently have allowed students to make predictions about and summarize some of our  recent studies. Our latest video involves a vampire suffering from a terrible tooth problem and just can't seem to catch a break. We have also had a lot of fun, spontaneous conversations about the temperature in the classroom, some of Madame's childhood trauma with animals, and students' preferences of various things (food, colors, activities). This is evidence of the students' willingness to take risks in our class discussions and play with the language.

It was nice to see many parents at Curriculum Night this past Tuesday. For those of you not able to attend, you can learn about sixth grade French homework here, and I am available all year to talk about language options for seventh grade, and beyond. (Language choice forms will go out late winter of 2019.)
Sixth graders have been working hard to maintain a "French only" policy in the classroom. We have established our expectations and routines, and will be diving into our vocabulary activities with a fun animated short film about a couple of disagreeing wildebeest. Our first poem recitation will be coming up next week. Students have had a taste of two of our big writing exercises that will continue throughout the year: traditional French dictées, and timed free writes, where students have a set amount of time to write as much as they can in French. We're off to a strong start in sixth grade French!
