LES INFOS

Le jeudi, 30 mai 2019
Fourth graders have been greatly increased their reading abilities. We watched a video about a hapless pig who just can't get what he wants (some cookies from a cookie jar), and then read a follow-up story about another pig whose rain-loving friend goes out of her way to help him satisfy his cookie craving. We are wrapping up the year with another short video clip about a man and a dog, and there's a big surprise in the end when we realize who has the last laugh (or bark, as the case may be!).

Our work in recent weeks has focused on speaking, listening, and reading. The source of these activities was a video about a dog and his owner that definitely pulled at our heartstrings! We learned a lot of vocabulary and had multiple discussions about the events in the video. Follow-up activities involved reading short sentences about the story, and we will next read a longer summary of the plot to help us continue to develop a connection between spoken and written French.

We have been wrapping up our international food unit and preparing vocabulary for our Movie Talk activity in fourth grade French. We have been singing our song for the Halloween rep, and have expanded our repertoire of Pause-cerveaux ("Brain Breaks"). In addition, we have been practicing the larger two-digit numbers, as they are not easy in French!

Right now, we are in the depths of our study of cultural differences in food consumption and preferences around the world. After having looked at photos from various countries, we have compared how much families spend on their meals, and if their food consists of fresh or packaged ingredients. Next week, we will see what student around the world have as options for school lunches! We will do some reading around these topics, and will then get to our first Movie Talk of the year, following an adopted puppy whose eating habits are dictated by his owner and his relationships!

It has been a lot of fun to continue working with these students. It was great to see those of you who were able to attend curriculum night this past week. I discussed my general approach to second language acquisition which can be summed up in two words, "comprehensible input." I also shared a little about what we have been doing in fourth grade.
We have begun the year talking about ourselves, and some of our food preferences. Those discussions will culminate in a "gallery walk," with students writing down observations about their classmates' likes and dislikes. Beginning next week, we will expand our exploration of culinary habits as we see what families around the world eat in a week. This study will also  allow us to learn some of the bigger, more complicated numbers. If you'd like to see how this unit rolls out, you can read about it here.
