One of my favorite things to do in my classes is find ways in which I can integrate French into what students are studying in other areas of the curriculum. Second graders are reading their second fable in French; we started with Le Lapin et la tortue, and are now working with Le lion et la souris. They are simple stories, but with language that is accessible and themes that are familiar. You can see the versions we read in class here.

Our skill work has ranged from reading to speaking to listening this winter. We finished our story of Edi l'éléphant, whose size turned out to be a huge advantage when a friend was in trouble. Students focused on reading and vocabulary during activities based on the Edi. Muzzy has returned and has been at the center of our speaking and listening exercises. Finally, second graders' Arctic study snuck into our French classes with a dance that we performed for rep, based on the song in the video to the left. |

We have had several threads running through our classes in recent weeks. Our literacy skill development have been rooted in the story of Edi l'éléphant, who is just desperate to be big, and no longer be aussi petit qu'un rat, qu'un insecte, ou qu'un moustique.

The video below was the focal point of our recent class activities. Students are beginning to work with written French and associating sentences with images. After vacation we will continue to work on reading, following the adventures of Edi l'éléphant, and continue to develop our speaking and listening skills as Muzzy reappears in our classes.

We have shifted our focus from farm animals to woodland creatures in recent weeks. Our current topic of conversation is rooted in the troubles of some animals whose personalities prevent them from achieving their objective, and a couple of other animals who work together to reach a common goal. We have been rehearsing our song for the Halloween rep, and will welcome Muzzy back into our activities in the coming weeks.

Topics of our recent classes in second grade have been rooted in several songs and books. The fun song Le Poussin piou gave us an understanding of the cultural differences in how people hear animals sounds! You can see the two versions of the song below; one with simple animation, one with the gestures we used for the song. (A great feature of YouTube is the ability to slow down the video! Click on the cog on the bottom of the video to see the settings in order to adjust the speed.) We have had a lot of fun with our farm animal study, and we will soon be transitioning to another animal-centered activity which will involve a couple of stubborn animals and two others who work together to overcome a similar obstacle.

It has been a lot of fun to work with these students again. It was great to see those of you who were able to attend curriculum night this past week. I discussed my general approach to second language acquisition which can be summed up in two words, "comprehensible input." I also shared a little about what we have been doing in second grade.
Our main activities this year have revolved around two major ideas: farm animals, and what various animals (and students!) can and cannot do. We are building up to watch our first animated short of the year (which I will post here, after the students have watched it for the first time!), and Muzzy will make his first appearance of the year. Students are being encouraged to us as much French as possible in the classroom, which is challenging, but we are slowly making progress!
