First graders revived their creativity and story-telling skills last month as we created a story about an animal in a house in search of a mouse, but had to jump from room to room in order to be successful. Simon's cat made another reappearance, harassing Simon while he's trying to make the bed. (And then the kitten shows up and makes the blanket all dirty. Simon can never get a break!) We have played some fun games that involve trying to find a cat that has hidden, either in a room in the house or in the classroom.

I have been so impressed with the continued progress of our first graders. We have wrapped up the first half of the Muzzy adventures (shhh...don't mention there's a second half, that's for second grade!), and brought back a song from the past with some creative modifications for our French rep today; click here to hear it! The French version of "Duck, duck, goose" involves days of the week and the mailman, so it was a perfect blend of our dove-tailing of the first grade study of community and our revisiting the days of the week. We narrowed our focus of our environment around us looking at rooms in the house. More songs and stories are slated for the weeks ahead.

We have been doing a lot of activities recently with vocabulary that seems unconnected, but there are some interesting threads that weave them together. We have dovetailed the study of community in their regular classes with some work with places in a town. Since we learned the word la poste, that brought us to a fun book about a mailman who mixes up his deliveries. We sang a song about a mailman that mirrors the English game "Duck, Duck, Goose." (We will be playing the game associated with the song in the coming weeks.) Days of the week have been a repeating topic in our conversations, and we were able to illustrate our daily activities: what specials happen on each day of the week, and various after school activities. And, Muzzy has finally made a reappearance!

The first graders have wowed me with their comprehension and ability to express themselves in French. It is rare that we have moments of English outside of important directions (though often students receive instructions for activities en français!) We have been working with prepositions of location; we sang a fun song about where different animals are, and a troublesome cat made an appearance in class; he will become a fixture in our activities.

First graders continue to work hard to use French as our language of communication in class. We will perform our Halloween song at rep this week. We continue to follow the adventures in Gondoland, and have seen Corvax try to solve his troubles with Sylvia's unrequited love. We have reviewed colors and body parts, and will soon learn prepositions of location. In addition, several other characters will come into our class activities; one will be an old friend, and the other will be a new but soon to be familiar personnage.

Recent weeks in first grade have brought some new and old material to our class activities. We have finished up our unit with La chenille qui fait des trous, which provided us with some fun drawing opportunities, as well as work with fruit and days of the week. This lead us right into our adventures with an old friend, Le grand Muzzy! We have just found Muzzy in a a bit of a pickle, having been caught eating the parking meters in the local village. We will be finding out what happens to him, as well as learn more about the struggles of Sylvia and Bob, the princess and the gardener, whose relationship does not please the king and queen!

It has been a lot of fun to continue working with these students. It was great to see those of you who were able to attend curriculum night this past week. I discussed my general approach to second language acquisition which can be summed up in two words, "comprehensible input." I also shared a little about what we have been doing in first grade.
Our first major unit is structured to parallel what students are studying in their regular classroom: caterpillars and butterflies. We started with a review of some of our favorite fruits before reading La chenille qui fait des trous. We will spend a little more time with this book, which you can see and hear in French below. We also had a new song that we have been hearing, as well as an oldie-but-goodie. We will soon return to story-telling and Muzzy will make his first major appearance this year!
